Fiji Turns 50!
Bula!
On Saturday, October 10, 2020, Fiji will celebrate 50 years of independence. Affectionately known as “Fiji Day”, October 10 marks the anniversary of both Fiji’s cession to the United Kingdom in 1874 and the attainment of independence in 1970.
Celebrating fifty years is a huge milestone for Fiji as well as a significant one for us here at Tourism Fiji. The tourism industry is incredibly important to the country, employing one in every nine people and making up 40% of the GDP. In 1970 we welcomed 110,042 visitors from around the world, and by the end of 2019, that number had increased to 894,000.
Within these fifty years, Fiji has welcomed the arrival of a national airline, new hotels and resorts, and many new attractions. However, throughout it all, one thing has remained consistent: the spirit and resilience of the Fijians. It is the Bula spirit and happiness of Fiji’s people that continues to attract new visitors each year and keep the previous ones coming back.
So while we may not be able to celebrate our 50th anniversary in Fiji this year, we want to share some virtual Fiji happiness and inspiration with you all. We hope to be able to welcome you back home to the place where happiness finds you very soon. In the meantime, Our Bula Spirit Awaits…
